We installed a cat/dog door from our house to the garage. My husband insisted because he doesn't want to smell the litter box while working from home (but he can work with piles of clutter and band equipment in his office -- go figure). When I live in Nebraska, I had a cat door that Zach used all the time to get to his litter box in the basement. Brian installed the door and put all three animals in the garage. None of them really got the concept so he tacked the door up so they could prance back and forth.
Charlie has now figured out he can TRY to come with us everytime we leave. Someone usually has to tell him to stay while one person backs the car out. We put the plastic back down and all day while Brian worked on the yard, Charlie went in and out, never leaving the yard and sitting on the driveway.
The cats were bewildered by the door until last night. That bright cat Sage, after sitting in the garage for an hour, decided to brave the plastic and go through. Zach, on the other hand, meowed like a school girl until we couldn't stand it so the tack went back up. That's all I need is the cat meowing all night in the garage because he's not to bright esp when I'm trying to get precious sleep before this baby comes. This cat used a cat door for 4 years. What's the deal?
So, two out of three animals get the animal door while the cranky 12 year old cat is either an idiot or being stubborn.
Brian stuck the cats in the garage before he left today. We'll see who's in the garage when I come home tonight. Maybe Zach will figure it out?

When we first put in a dog door, my son had to crawl in and out the door several times until the dogs finally figured it out. Fortunately, it's a big door for big dogs, so he didn't get stuck.
Well... what happened???
